Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a popular treatment for unsightly veins on the legs and other parts of the body. Through the injection of a sclerosing solution, we can eliminate unsightly veins and relieve discomfort in the thighs, legs and ankles.

With today’s mild sclerosing agents, sclerotherapy offers a comfortable and predictable solution for spider veins and varicose veins.  At Cosmetique, we often combine sclerotherapy with pulsed dye laser treatments for “broken” blood vessels in order to deliver the most optimal treatment in each individual situation.

Who Can Benefit From Sclerotherapy?

Millions of adults are bothered by spider veins and varicose veins that form on the legs and ankles. These symptoms are typically a result of hereditary predisposition combined with various lifestyle factors. If you spend a lot of time standing or walking, you may be prone to varicose veins. In the months during and following pregnancy, women are especially prone to developing these types of veins.

Sclerotherapy can treat

  • Varicose veins – raised, dark-colored veins that often cause aching or burning sensations in the legs.
  • Spider veins, also known as broken blood vessels or telangiectasias – small red or purple veins that often extend into thin branches.

If you’re a generally healthy person who wants to eliminate spider veins or varicose veins, sclerotherapy may be an excellent option.

Vein Treatment in New York: What to Expect

After a consultation, we will identify the areas of concern and determine if laser treatment, sclerotherapy or both is indicated. During the office treatment, the targeted veins are injected with a sclerosing solution or treated with the pulsed dye laser.

A typical treatment requires multiple injections, but is completed in less than one hour. You will likely need multiple treatments to achieve your desired results.

After Sclerotherapy

The recovery period following sclerotherapy is typically short and relatively pain-free. Immediately following treatment, expect some degree of redness, swelling, pain, or skin irritation at the injection site.

The injection sites may be wrapped and we may have you wear a compression garment to help reduce any swelling. During the few days after treatment, you should avoid standing or sitting in one position for extended periods of time. Light, but not strenuous, physical activity is recommended.

After about a month, all swelling, redness, and bruising should subside, and you can begin more rigorous forms of physical activity and exercise. Be sure to monitor the effectiveness of all injections, checking to see how well the sclerosing solution worked to collapse any varicose veins.  You will be instructed when to return for subsequent treatments as necessary.
