Weight fluctuations and aging can diminish the shape and tone of your arms. An arm lift is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat and loose skin from the upper arms. Also known as brachioplasty, this procedure can give your arms a slimmer, more toned and contoured look.
The best candidates for an arm lift are individuals who are healthy and have realistic expectations. If you are self-conscious about the appearance of your upper arms, you may be a candidate for surgery.
An arm lift can treat:
Arm lift surgery is often performed after major weight loss, when loose skin appears on many different areas of the body. In other cases, the surgery removes fat on the upper arms that is resistant to diet and exercise. After surgery, you will have slimmer arms and improved self-esteem.
An arm lift is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. Dr. Gotkin tailors the surgical incision to meet your needs. Minor arm lifts require small incisions that can be concealed in the armpit.
In most cases, incisions are placed in the inner part of the arm, extending from the armpit toward the elbow. After making the incision, Dr. Gotkin removes excess fat and loose skin. The skin is then re-draped to better contour to the natural muscular shape of the arm. All incisions are closed with stitches.
After surgery, Dr. Gotkin applies an elasticized compression garment to minimize swelling. You will experience some bruising, swelling and discomfort for a couple of weeks. This can be managed with prescription medication given prior to surgery.
Recovery times vary. In most cases, you should be able to resume normal activities in 7-10 days. Stitches are removed in about 3 weeks. Strenuous upper body physical activity should be avoided for about 6-8 weeks.
You will have permanent scarring following an arm lift. Your scars will appear raised and pink for the first several months following surgery. Over the course of 12-18 months, your scars will begin to gradually flatten and fade.
